Over the last 60 years the Napier Bridge Club has seen huge changes in both the social and technical aspects of playing bridge. There are however two things which never change - the delight in playing the game itself, and the conviviality between the players. These remain as strong as ever and take us into the next 60 years in good heart.

Diamond Jubilee Dinner
As I sit watching our grandson playing cricket and writing to you, I am reflecting on last night. The evening was all I hoped for, however it takes a group of people to do what we did. As I met with people the ideas began to happen and as a result we had what I would term a very classy evening fitting to recognise those before us who gave us the opportunity to celebrate.
Thanks must go to (in alphabetical order) are:
Barb Twyford shared with us how she was scared of John Pitts in the very early
days and talked about the smoking during play and the dress code of the day,
plus lots of other little pearls about the bridge in the early days.
Cath, thanks for your floral decoration. You are a tireless worker
Erica took lots of photos, which we will display at the rooms in due course
James and Barrie, (grandson and Mr B) for manning the bar
John Pitts for a really thoughtful chat about the old days.
Judy Macdonald who provided silverware sufficient for all the tables, and she
will be washing today as she took all the linen home.
June Lawrence for her visionary decoration, and ably assisted by Pete.
Marie, what a beautifully decorated cake and the texture of the cake was superb.
Mike for the financial bit and the general keeper of things.
Murray Wiggins kept the bridge play going at a fast rate so we could
prepare for the party.
Pete for background music
Sonya and friends for the catering and serving
Table cloths, candelabras, candle sticks and napkins were a join contribution
Finally on the thanks yous, there was a group of people who stayed over between play and the party who did the transformation of the rooms from the bridge room to a celebration venue.
And to all our people who helped make the evening what it was.
When John Pitts phoned me prior to the function he asked if he could do a bit of photocopy and I thought what are we in for here and this is not what I had planned. I was quite wrong as John could produce a hand played in a tournament in 1974 and asked us all how we would play it. Then he shared with us how he played it. His second board was equally distributional and again he shared with us how it was played, after challenging the party as to what cards should be held to defeat the contract. There was some interaction about the line of play. John also shared with us how he was mentored and how he has mentored players. He started his love of bridge as a university student in England and eventually joined bridge clubs in New Zealand. Thanks John for sharing and was I so wrong in wondering whether or not the former teacher was going to relive his teaching past.
Our function was proudly sponsored by Bayswater Vehicles in memory of Dot Townshend, a very keen player in the early years of the club.
